Sustainability & Community Impact
Our Guiding Philosophy: Tri Hita Karana
At Shanghai to Bali, our approach to sustainability is deeply rooted in the Balinese philosophy of Tri Hita Karana—the three causes of well-being. This concept emphasizes the essential harmony between humans and the divine, between humans and their community, and between humans and their natural environment. This is not just a CSR policy for us; it is the guiding principle that informs our operations, our partner selection, and our engagement with the island of Bali.
We believe that true luxury is not extractive. It is regenerative, contributing positively to the ecosystems and communities that make Bali such an extraordinary destination. Our commitment is to ensure that a journey with us leaves a positive legacy.
Environmental Commitments: Preserving Paradise
We recognize that high-end travel, particularly private aviation, has a significant environmental footprint. We are committed to mitigating this impact through concrete, measurable actions.
- Carbon Offset Program: For every private charter flight we operate between Shanghai and Bali, we calculate the total carbon emissions and purchase high-quality, verified carbon credits from Gold Standard or Verra-certified projects. We prioritize projects based in Indonesia, such as the Katingan Mentaya Peatland Restoration and Conservation Project, directly contributing to regional climate solutions.
- Marine Conservation Partnership: A portion of our revenue from all marine-based activities (yacht charters, diving) is donated directly to the Coral Triangle Center (CTC) in Sanur. This supports their vital work in marine protected area management and coral reef restoration. We also facilitate private, educational tours of the CTC for our clients to foster a deeper appreciation for Bali’s marine biodiversity.
- Single-Use Plastic Reduction: We enforce a strict no-single-use-plastic policy across all our ground operations, including vehicles and curated experiences. Furthermore, a key criterion in our partner selection is a demonstrated commitment to reducing plastic waste. We champion partners like Capella Ubud and Amankila, who have robust, industry-leading sustainability programs.
Community Commitments: Empowering People
Our business is intrinsically linked to the well-being of the Balinese people. We are dedicated to creating shared value and ensuring that the benefits of tourism are distributed equitably.
- Prioritizing Local Employment: Over 95% of our Bali-based team are Indonesian nationals, with a majority hired from the local villages and communities in which we operate. We are committed to providing fair wages, comprehensive benefits including BPJS Kesehatan (health) and Ketenagakerjaan (social security), and pathways for professional growth.
- Supporting Local Artisans & Entrepreneurs: We actively avoid commercial, mass-market souvenir stops. Instead, we connect our clients directly with master artisans in their workshops—silversmiths in Celuk, woodcarvers in Mas, painters in Batuan. We ensure that the artisans are compensated fairly and directly, preserving cultural heritage and supporting the local creative economy.
- Community Development Projects: Through our parent company, the Juara Holding Group, we contribute to the ‘Yayasan Juara Anak Bangsa’, a foundation focused on providing educational scholarships and improving access to clean water and sanitation in remote rural communities in East Bali and Nusa Penida.
Our commitment to sustainability is an ongoing journey of improvement and accountability. It is a core responsibility, managed and championed by every member of our team, to ensure that the beauty and harmony of Bali can be enjoyed by generations to come.

Advancing environmental stewardship beyond mitigation
The gentle whisper of the Indian Ocean breeze carries not just the intoxicating scent of frangipani, but also the quiet resolve of a journey designed to resonate far beyond the horizon, leaving a positive legacy etched into the very fabric of Bali. While acknowledging the environmental footprint inherent in high-end travel, our commitment extends beyond mere mitigation; we strive for regenerative impact, actively contributing to the health and vitality of Bali’s precious ecosystems. This means a proactive approach to resource management, habitat protection, and responsible consumption at every touchpoint of your experience.
Our dedication to environmental preservation is exemplified through robust carbon offsetting and innovative waste management strategies. Since 2022, Shanghai to Bali has invested in verified global reforestation and renewable energy projects, offsetting an estimated 150% of the carbon emissions generated by our private aviation segments, ensuring a net positive impact. This commitment is continuously audited by independent third parties to guarantee transparency and effectiveness. Furthermore, we are relentless in our pursuit of a plastic-free future for our operations. Our goal is to eliminate over 95% of single-use plastics from all Shanghai to Bali curated experiences and partner properties by the end of 2024, a significant reduction from an initial baseline of 70% at the start of our initiative in 2021.
Beyond carbon and plastics, we champion comprehensive conservation efforts. We actively support local initiatives focused on marine biodiversity, from coral reef restoration projects in Nusa Penida to vital mangrove reforestation programs along Bali’s coastlines. Our partnerships with eco-friendly resorts and villas ensure that water conservation, energy efficiency, and sustainable landscaping practices are paramount. This includes sophisticated greywater recycling systems, solar energy integration, and the exclusive use of locally sourced, organic produce to minimize food miles and support sustainable agriculture.
Cultivating community and cultural resilience
True luxury, as we define it, intrinsically links with the well-being of the communities that host us and the preservation of the rich cultural tapestry that makes Bali so unique. Our commitment to Tri Hita Karana extends deeply into fostering genuine, reciprocal relationships with local Balinese people, ensuring that our presence enriches their lives and empowers their traditions. We believe in building capacity, not dependency, and in celebrating the island’s vibrant heritage.
Economic empowerment is a cornerstone of our community engagement. An impressive 80% of all provisions, handcrafted amenities, and excursion services for our guests are sourced directly from Balinese small businesses and local communities, significantly bolstering the island’s grassroots economy. This includes partnerships with artisan cooperatives for bespoke souvenirs, local organic farms for culinary experiences, and traditional healers for authentic wellness journeys. We ensure fair wages and ethical working conditions across our supply chain, providing stable income opportunities and fostering sustainable livelihoods for hundreds of families.
Furthermore, we are deeply invested in the preservation of Balinese culture, a living heritage that captivates every visitor. We allocate an annual fund of USD 50,000 to support local foundations dedicated to preserving ancient Balinese dance forms, traditional music, and spiritual ceremonies, ensuring these legacies thrive for future generations. We also facilitate educational initiatives, sponsoring scholarships for young Balinese students pursuing higher education in sustainable tourism, traditional arts, and environmental science. This holistic approach ensures that the spiritual and artistic heart of Bali beats strong, supported by mindful tourism. The island’s iconic Subak system, a UNESCO World Heritage cultural landscape of rice paddies and water temples, perfectly embodies this harmony between nature and human endeavor, and we actively support its continued preservation and understanding.
